On 28th of September, I had gone to a workshop that talks about how we as student need to prepare to face the corporate world. Actually, I had been informing about this workshop quite late. So I went to the workshop without preparing anything. We need to get well dressed like a long sleeve shirt, a slack trousers and a pair of black shoe but I go there just with a t-shirt, jeans and a pair of sneakers. For some reason, I am very embarrassing but for the sake of information, I go to that workshop.
First of all, the main thing that they have talk in this workshop is how we as student need to prepare to face the corporate world. The person that gives the talk is a very young and nice Chinese woman. Her name is Wendy Lee and she work as professional image consultant. From her position I know that she is very good in this kind of job. Because, when I saw her achievement, she was awarded as the Asian Image Consultant of the Year by The Australian Image Company in 2004. My first impression of her is she is a person that can be getting along easily. It is because, when we first come into that room, she entertains me and my friends and asks us to find a place to sit.
The first topic is first impression. First impression is very important. Normally, people just take about seven second the get their first impression on some people. According to Prof Albert Merahbian, Professor Emeritus of Psychology from UCLA, 55 percent of the first impression is from the visual look, 38 percent from vocal and just 7 percent is from verbal. From this we know that visual is very important in setting the appropriate expectation to the customer. Actually, there were five way to create a great first impression. There were smile, look good, great eye contact, good handshake and speak well.
. There are a lot of activities that has been held there. We also had been given a book that I think she wrote it. In this book, it talks about everything that we need to know, from how to wear a cloth until how we put a food in our mouth. The entire thing that she teaches is very important and I very appreciate it. One of the activities that I want to share here is we need to sit in a group. Then she distributes a bunch of pictures. Then she needs us to discuss it and arrange all the picture of cloth into some categories that she has assign and the picture must according to the hyraces. The categories are casual, professional and casual professional. It is very interesting activity because from there we can show out team work. Actually, it is quite hard to differentiate all the cloth because for me, all the cloth is the same. Luckily, I have into a very good group. They help and teach me how to differentiate it.
She also talks about gentlemen and ladies in wearing clothes to the workplace. In this part, she has touch about the haircut style, what the suitable haircut that can attract the manager reaction, shirt, know about the shirt hyraces in the job world and the best pattern in the job life, tie, how to wear tie perfectly, belt, know how to wear the belt and she also said that always wear belt, whether your use it or not and shoe, know about the hyraces of shoe in the job world. This thing are very important in our career in make us professional.
Then, she also had taught us how to deal in the business meal etiquette. She had shown us the setting for the formal event. Before this, I thought that we can put spoon and fork just everywhere. But actually it has their own place. She also taught us how to us the dinner napkin and how to put it if we need to go somewhere while we were eating.
Finally, there are lots of new things that I have learned in this workshop. It is very good workshop. I think it is very lucky for me because I have the chance to join such a very informative workshop. I hope I will get another chance to join a workshop like this.
